This month we are highlighting one of our new volunteers, Julie Murray. Julie applied to be one of our Kindness Warriors – helping clients through the COVID-19 pandemic, and beyond.
What role are you commencing at In Great Company?
A “Random Acts of Kindness Warrior”.
What are you looking forward to, excited about, expecting?
Becoming a Kindness Warrior resonated with me, as there is such a beautiful synergy between the softness of kindness and the strength of a warrior. I am excited to meet people, build friendships and I expect I will enjoy it even more than I think!
What are you hoping to achieve in your role?
It is a privilege for me to have the opportunity to make someone’s day a little happier and brighter. If I can help another person to feel connected and supported in whatever way they need, then I will feel that I am indeed embodying the spirit of a Kindness Warrior.
What experience have you had volunteering and what did you value most about those experiences?
My previous volunteering experience has been with youth who were struggling with school, family and homelessness. What I valued most was the relationships developed and that, despite their circumstances, these young people still had hope. Many just wanted to be heard and find their way, in their own way. This experience reinforced for me that, with hope, good support, and kind and open conversations, outcomes can change for the better.
Why do you think it’s so important to volunteer during such challenging times?
Personally, anything I undertake must align with my value system, and when I read what In Great Company aims to achieve with this role, I felt it was my call to action. A sense of community and belonging is needed more than ever so that no one feels alone. Kindness and strength are so necessary now and from these challenging times I believe that, together, we can emerge as a more compassionate society.
